TITLE

“The Star Sower” Restored

ABOUT

With the new government of Kaunas (Lithuania) and its art program “Kaunas Highlights”, an old graffiti piece titled “Star Seeder” was finally restored.

The original version of this work was created by Lithuanian artist Morfai in 2008. Painted at night without official permission, the simple stencil appeared on the wall of one of Kaunas’s most iconic locations — Vytautas the Great War Museum.

Unfortunately, the artwork was soon painted over, and even the light fixture that had illuminated the wall was turned away. Morfai believes this was done by a traditionalist architect responsible for the building.

Over time, the image of the mural spread widely online and in the media. It even appeared as a question on the Russian TV game show “What? Where? When?”, where none of the participants could identify its origin.

Years later, with the city’s new administration came new cultural initiatives, including the “Kaunas Highlights” program. Morfai took part and won third place, along with the opportunity to officially recreate “Star Seeder.” After three weeks of work, stars made from stone were installed on the wall, and the lighting was returned to its original position.

After eight years of waiting, the people of Kaunas could finally see the first legalized street artwork in Lithuania — and possibly in all the Baltic States.
