ABOUT
The building situated on the banks of the Nemunas naturally suggested a water theme.
That’s how the idea was born – to immortalize the fish species that have lived here for centuries. The dark green background serves as an allusion to the deep and mysterious waters of the Nemunas.
The arrangement of numerous frames, along with small gilded plaques bearing Latin names, creates the impression of a collection of scientific specimens or an exhibition in a zoological museum.
The rhythm of the frames architecturally corresponds with the repetition of the apartment building’s windows and balconies.
The fish painted within golden frames appear like portraits in an old manor’s gallery.
In total, there are 22 species – each accompanied by its Lithuanian name. The mural resembles a page from an encyclopedia.
The artwork is not intended to encourage fishing, but rather to draw attention to the local wildlife and to highlight the ecological importance of this river and the survival of its species for Lithuania’s biological system. Few can imagine the diversity hidden in the dark waters of the Nemunas – an entire unseen world.
The fish were painted with the help of Hodas Art and Cram.
The project was funded by the Kaunas City Municipality.
The wall was insulated for the mural.
