TITLE

Freedom

ABOUT

The word Laisvė (“Freedom”) was transplanted from the now-defunct Laisvės cinema logo onto an abandoned, derelict building on Miško Street in Kaunas. Its bold, graffiti-like lettering immediately caught my attention. I saw it as a universal symbol — a single word carrying meaning for everyone — and chose to place it in a completely new context.

The small, neglected building was perfect for the piece: its proportions suited the design, and the abandoned surroundings allowed the work to exist without concerns of vandalism. I removed the original quotation marks from the logo to avoid ambiguity, highlighting the pure idea of freedom — freedom of expression, creativity, and thought — amid the chaos of a forgotten urban space.

This project later inspired iterations beyond the wall itself, including a t-shirt by Garbės Žodis featuring the same word Freedom. It remains a striking example of reimagining a familiar visual element in a new urban context.
